Lake Wynonah is a gated community located south of Pottsville. (All incoming traffic is monitored by a guard post at the front gate 24/7). It is perfectly situated for year round living or vacationing on 1,476 acres of rolling hills. There are approximately 1,200 homes with about 800 used for full-time residency.
Work began in 1970 on Lake Wynonah by a company in Tennessee. In 1974, the Lake Wynonah Property Owners Association (LWPOA) was established and continues to govern the community's operation today.
The Lake Wynonah community has an active civic association which sponsors activities for all property owners (Easter Egg hunt, Mardi Gras weekend, New Years Eve, Halloween, etc). An active boating and fishing committee keeps both lakes stocked with bass, trout, northern pike, catfish, and walleye and has an annual fishing rodeo in June.
There are two spring-fed lakes, controlled by a dam. The "little lake", or Fawn Lake, is about 3/4 mile long, up to 45' deep and covers close to 27 acres. Only non-motor or electric boats are allowed on this lake. There is one no-fee boat launch along with a pavilion, picnic tables, horseshoes and a playground. It is located in Wayne township and children attend Blue Mountain schools. The larger lake is Lake Wynonah. It is 2.5 miles long, 90' deep and covers 175 acres. All types of motorcraft are permitted to be used on this lake. Fishing, swimming, water skiing, tubing and other water sports are allowed. The larger lake has 2 no-fee boat launch areas (for those folks who do not have lakefront access) to get your boat in the water. A marina is open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from Memorial to Labor Day, weather permitting. Lake Wynonah is located largely in South Manheim township, with children going to Schuylkill Haven schools.
If you don't want to spend your day on the lakes, there is a Lodge which provides year-round activities (dances, parties, meetings, pool tournaments) and is open every weekend for dinner and drinks. You will also find a large swimming pool + 2 wading pools, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, playground and picnic areas for member usage.
This area is only 30 minutes from Reading and Hershey, and about an hour from Allentown and Harrisburg. There is close access to Routes 61, 183, 78 and 81. Hershey and Dorney Parks and Knoebels Grove are close, as well as the Yuengling Brewery, Hawk Mountain, the Appalachian Trail, golf, winter skiing, Ashland Coal Museum and Cabelas.
